Grapes and raisins are uniquely dangerous to dogs because they can cause sudden, irreversible kidney failure โ and scientists still don't fully understand why. There is no known 'safe dose.' Even one grape can be fatal for some dogs.
Xylitol is a natural sweetener found in thousands of products โ sugarless gum, some peanut butters, baked goods, candy, vitamins, and oral care products. It is perfectly safe for humans but causes life-threatening blood sugar crashes and liver failure in dogs.
Human NSAIDs โ ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin โ are among the most common causes of dog poisoning. Dogs absorb these drugs differently than humans, and even a single adult tablet can cause serious harm, especially in small dogs.
Acetaminophen / Tylenol / Paracetamol
CRITICAL RISKAcetaminophen (sold as Tylenol, paracetamol) is one of the most dangerous human medications for dogs. A single regular-strength tablet (325 mg) can cause serious harm to a small dog, and extra-strength tablets (500 mg) can be fatal. Unlike ibuprofen, acetaminophen attacks both the liver and the blood's ability to carry oxygen.
Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol is one of the most life-threatening toxins dogs can encounter. It has a sweet taste that attracts animals, and as little as 1.4 ml/kg can be fatal. Every minute counts โ the antidote (fomepizole) is only effective within the first 8โ12 hours. After that, acute kidney failure is almost certain without dialysis.
Rodenticide / Rat Poison / Mouse Bait
CRITICAL RISKAnticoagulant rodenticides (warfarin, brodifacoum, bromadiolone) are the most common type of rat poison. They work by blocking Vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting. A dog that eats rat poison may appear completely fine for 3โ5 days while its clotting factors are depleted โ then suddenly begin bleeding internally. This delay is the most dangerous aspect: owners often do not act in time.
Sago palm (Cycas revoluta) is a popular ornamental plant found in homes and gardens across warm-climate US states. It is one of the most toxic plants known to dogs. Every part of the plant is poisonous, but the seeds (nuts) are the most dangerous โ ingesting just one or two seeds can cause fatal liver failure. The mortality rate even with aggressive treatment is over 50%.
Wild Mushrooms / Amanita species
CRITICAL TO MEDIUM (by species)Wild mushrooms are extremely variable in toxicity โ some are harmless, others are rapidly fatal. The most dangerous are Amanita phalloides (Death Cap) and Amanita ocreata (Destroying Angel), which cause fatal liver and kidney failure. Gyromitra species cause hemolytic anemia. Because mushroom identification requires expertise, ALL wild mushroom ingestion should be treated as a potential emergency.
Batteries (Button / Disc / Alkaline)
CRITICAL HAZARDBattery ingestion โ especially small button (disc) batteries โ is a life-threatening emergency. When lodged in the esophagus or GI tract, button batteries generate an electrical current that causes rapid, severe liquefactive necrosis within 2 hours. Alkaline batteries cause chemical burns from caustic material if chewed. All battery ingestion requires immediate emergency veterinary care.
Toxic Lilies (Easter, Tiger, Daylily)
CRITICAL RISKCertain lilies โ including Easter lily, tiger lily, Asiatic lily, and daylily โ are extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause acute kidney failure. If your dog has chewed on any part of a lily plant, treat it as an emergency and contact a vet immediately.
Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is one of the most dangerous plants a dog can ingest. It contains cardiac glycosides โ the same class of compounds used in heart medications like digoxin โ which at toxic doses cause severe, life-threatening heart arrhythmias. Every part of the plant, including dried leaves, is deadly.
Oleander (Nerium oleander) is a beautiful but deadly flowering shrub common in warm climates. It contains potent cardiac glycosides throughout all parts of the plant โ leaves, flowers, stems, bark, and even the water in vases. Ingestion of even a small amount can be fatal.
Yew (Taxus species) is a common evergreen shrub and tree widely used in landscaping. It is extraordinarily toxic โ nearly every part of the plant (needles, bark, seeds) contains taxine alkaloids. Dogs can die within hours of ingestion, and sometimes there is no warning before sudden collapse.
Castor Bean (Ricinus communis)
CRITICAL RISKCastor bean (Ricinus communis) contains ricin โ one of the most potent natural toxins known to science. The seeds are the most toxic part. A single seed can kill a small dog. Ricin has no antidote; treatment is entirely supportive. This is a true veterinary emergency requiring immediate action.
Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum)
CRITICAL RISKPoison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is the plant historically used to execute Socrates โ and it is equally deadly to dogs. It grows widely as a weed across North America and Europe. The plant contains coniine and related piperidine alkaloids that cause ascending paralysis and can kill through respiratory failure within hours.
Jimsonweed / Datura (Datura stramonium)
CRITICAL RISKJimsonweed (Datura stramonium), also called thorn apple, devil's trumpet, or locoweed, is a toxic weed found across North America, Europe, and Asia. It contains potent tropane alkaloids โ atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine โ that produce a severe anticholinergic toxidrome. Every part of the plant is toxic, and effects can be life-threatening.
Raw Salmon / Raw Fish (Pacific Northwest)
CRITICAL RISKSalmon poisoning disease (SPD) is a potentially fatal condition unique to dogs (and some related canids) that occurs after eating raw or undercooked fish from the Pacific Northwest โ primarily salmon, trout, and steelhead. It is caused by a rickettsial bacteria (Neorickettsia helminthoeca) that is transmitted through a fluke parasite in the fish. Without treatment, the fatality rate can exceed 90%.
Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol / Vitamin D3)
CRITICAL RISKVitamin D toxicity (cholecalciferol poisoning) is one of the most insidious dog poisonings because symptoms can be delayed 12โ36 hours while irreversible organ damage occurs. Sources include vitamin D3 rodenticides (the most dangerous), human supplements, certain dog foods recalled for excess vitamin D, and psoriasis creams containing calcipotriene. All suspected vitamin D overdoses require emergency veterinary care.
Compost heaps and garbage containing moldy food are extremely dangerous for dogs. Molds that grow on decaying organic matter produce tremorgenic mycotoxins (particularly penitrem A and roquefortine C) that cause violent muscle tremors and seizures โ symptoms that can appear within 30 minutes and can be fatal without treatment. Dogs are strongly attracted to the smell of compost and moldy food, making this a particularly common and deadly poisoning.
Metaldehyde โ the active ingredient in many slug and snail baits (sold as Deadline, Bug-Geta, Corry's, and others) โ is one of the most acutely toxic garden products dogs can encounter. Dogs are strongly attracted to the bait's grain-based formulation, which is designed to be palatable to mollusks but is equally appealing to dogs. Metaldehyde causes violent tremors, seizures, and hyperthermia with a very rapid onset, and without immediate aggressive treatment, can be fatal.
Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)
CRITICALBlue-green algae are cyanobacteria that produce potent toxins in warm, stagnant freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers. Exposure โ through drinking, swimming, or licking fur โ can cause fatal liver failure or rapid neurological collapse within 15 minutes to a few hours. This is a true veterinary emergency with essentially no safe exposure threshold.
In North America, dogs most frequently encounter pit vipers (rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths) and coral snakes. Pit viper venom is primarily hemotoxic and cytotoxic, causing severe local tissue destruction and blood clotting disorders. Coral snake venom is primarily neurotoxic. Any suspected venomous snake bite is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate treatment with antivenom.
Dogs frequently mouth toads out of curiosity. Most native toads in North America cause only mild salivation and vomiting. However, the Cane Toad (Rhinella marina, also called Bufo marinus or the Giant Toad) is found in Florida, Texas, Hawaii, and parts of the Gulf Coast and is genuinely life-threatening. The Colorado River Toad (Incilius alvarius) is similarly dangerous. Both species secrete bufadienolide compounds through parotoid glands behind their heads โ compounds related to digitalis that directly disrupt cardiac function.
E-cigarette devices and refill cartridges contain nicotine in liquid solution (e-liquid or vape juice) at concentrations of 3โ59 mg/mL. A single standard cartridge may contain 6โ36 mg of nicotine, and refill bottles can contain far more. Because the nicotine is already dissolved, it is absorbed through mucous membranes and skin almost immediately upon contact. E-liquid also contains propylene glycol and flavorings, but nicotine is the primary toxicological concern.
The Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale), also called Meadow Saffron, contains colchicine โ an alkaloid that inhibits cell division by disrupting microtubule formation. Unlike the Spring Crocus (Crocus sativus), which causes only mild GI symptoms, Autumn Crocus causes severe, delayed multi-organ toxicity. The entire plant is toxic but the bulb (corm) contains the highest colchicine concentration. This is one of the most dangerous plants a dog can ingest.
Tea tree oil (Melaleuca oil) is one of the most commonly misused essential oils by pet owners. While very diluted concentrations (0.1โ1%) in commercial pet products are generally tolerated, undiluted or highly concentrated tea tree oil is extremely toxic to dogs. It is rapidly absorbed through both skin and the GI tract, causing severe neurological depression and liver injury. This is a true emergency even if the dog has not ingested the oil โ dermal exposure to concentrated oil is sufficient to cause severe toxicity.
While the main mushrooms entry covers general mycotoxin/mold toxicity, this entry specifically addresses Amanita phalloides (Death Cap) and related Amanita species (Destroying Angel, Galerina marginata) โ the most dangerous mushrooms dogs can eat. The challenge is that symptoms are delayed 6โ24 hours after ingestion, the mushrooms are extremely difficult to identify, and by the time severe symptoms appear, irreversible liver damage has often occurred. The Death Cap is responsible for the majority of fatal mushroom poisonings in the world.
Chocolate is one of the most common causes of dog poisoning in the US. The toxic compounds are theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolize far slower than humans. The darker the chocolate, the greater the risk.
All members of the Allium family โ onions, garlic, chives, leeks, and shallots โ are toxic to dogs. They damage red blood cells, causing hemolytic anemia. Garlic is 5ร more concentrated than onion. Powdered forms are even more dangerous than fresh.
This is NOT a toxin emergency โ it's a mechanical hazard. Cooked chicken bones splinter into razor-sharp shards when chewed or swallowed. Unlike a poison, the danger here is physical: shards can lacerate the esophagus, perforate the stomach lining, or cause a life-threatening intestinal blockage requiring emergency surgery. Symptoms may be delayed 24โ72 hours while the shard travels through the GI tract.
Caffeine is toxic to dogs because they metabolize it far more slowly than humans, allowing it to build up to dangerous levels. While a dog lapping up a spilled cup of coffee may be fine, caffeine tablets, energy drinks, coffee grounds, and tea bags can all cause severe cardiac and neurological effects.
Macadamia nuts are uniquely toxic to dogs among all nuts. The mechanism is still unknown, but they reliably cause a distinct syndrome: hind limb weakness, elevated temperature, vomiting, and tremors. While fatalities from macadamia nuts alone are rare, macadamia nut cookies or chocolates combine two toxins and dramatically increase the risk.
Alcohol affects dogs far faster and more severely than humans. Dogs are much smaller, have different liver metabolism, and can experience life-threatening effects from amounts that would only cause mild intoxication in an adult human. Sources include alcoholic beverages, fermenting foods, mouthwash, some medications, and rising bread dough.
Raw yeast bread dough is dangerous for two reasons simultaneously. First, the warm environment of a dog's stomach causes the yeast to continue rising โ expanding the dough and potentially causing life-threatening bloat. Second, as yeast ferments, it produces ethanol (alcohol) which is absorbed into the bloodstream, causing alcohol poisoning. Both processes happen at the same time.
Essential Oils (Tea Tree / Melaleuca)
MEDIUM-HIGH RISKEssential oils have surged in popularity for home aromatherapy, cleaning, and DIY wellness products โ but many are seriously toxic to dogs. Tea tree oil (melaleuca) is the most commonly reported, but pennyroyal, clove, cinnamon, citrus (d-limonene), and eucalyptus oils are all dangerous. Dogs can be poisoned by topical application, ingestion, or prolonged inhalation.
Nicotine / Tobacco / Vaping Products
HIGH RISKNicotine toxicity in dogs can come from many sources: chewed cigarettes, cigars, nicotine gum, patches, pouches, and especially e-cigarette liquids (vape juice). Vaping liquids are the most dangerous because they contain concentrated liquid nicotine โ a small vial can contain a lethal dose for a small to medium dog. Nicotine causes rapid-onset neurological and cardiac effects.
Azaleas and rhododendrons are extremely popular ornamental shrubs in American gardens โ and among the most toxic plants for dogs. They contain grayanotoxins, which disrupt sodium channels in heart and nerve cells. As little as 0.2% of the dog's body weight in leaves can cause life-threatening cardiac effects.
Human vitamins and supplements โ particularly iron supplements and prenatal vitamins โ are a surprisingly common source of dog poisoning. The sweet coating makes them taste good to dogs. Iron overload causes direct GI damage followed by a systemic toxicity phase that can progress to liver failure. Prenatal vitamins are especially dangerous because they contain high doses of iron and other concentrated nutrients.
Mothballs are deceptively dangerous โ they look like small candy, smell strongly which attracts dogs' noses, and are often stored in accessible areas. Two types exist: naphthalene-based (most toxic) and paradichlorobenzene-based (moderately toxic). Both are serious veterinary emergencies if ingested. Even skin contact or inhalation of vapors in an enclosed space can cause toxicity.
US pennies made after 1982 are 97.5% zinc with a thin copper coating. Stomach acid dissolves this coating rapidly, releasing zinc ions that cause severe hemolytic anemia โ destruction of red blood cells. Other sources of zinc toxicity include zinc nuts and bolts, zinc oxide ointments (like diaper rash cream), galvanized metal, and some zinc-containing supplements.
Lantana camara is a popular flowering plant used in gardens and landscaping throughout warm climates. Despite its attractive flowers, all parts โ especially the unripe berries and leaves โ are toxic to dogs. The toxins cause liver damage and a condition called hepatogenous photosensitization.
Nightshade plants โ including deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) and bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara) โ contain tropane alkaloids (atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine) and solanine. These compounds disrupt the nervous system and can cause severe symptoms ranging from digestive upset to neurological emergency.
Black walnuts (Juglans nigra) pose two distinct risks to dogs. The hulls contain juglone, a compound toxic to dogs that causes GI upset. More dangerously, walnuts that have fallen from trees often become moldy, and certain molds (Penicillium species) produce tremorgenic mycotoxins that cause seizures and neurological emergency in dogs.
Horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum), commonly called conkers in the UK, are familiar autumn hazards for dog owners. Dogs are often attracted to the shiny, smooth nuts. They contain two toxic compounds: aescin (a saponin that causes GI upset) and aesculin (a coumarin glycoside). They also pose a choking and intestinal blockage risk.
Nutmeg is a common kitchen spice that is seriously toxic to dogs. The compound myristicin, naturally present in nutmeg, causes neurological and cardiovascular effects ranging from disorientation to seizures. Dogs are sometimes exposed through baked goods containing nutmeg โ even a small amount of the spice can be dangerous.
Salt is an everyday household mineral, but in large quantities it can cause life-threatening sodium ion toxicosis in dogs. Dogs can be exposed through eating salt-rich foods (chips, pretzels, cured meats), rock salt/ice melt, ocean water, or homemade play dough. Smaller dogs are at greater risk.
Corn on the Cob (cob ingestion)
HIGH RISKCorn kernels themselves are not toxic to dogs, but corn cobs are extremely dangerous. A corn cob cannot be properly digested, and its size, shape, and fibrous texture make it likely to cause a complete gastrointestinal obstruction. This is a surgical emergency that can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid)
HIGH RISKAspirin is one of the most common human medications that dog owners accidentally give or dogs accidentally ingest. Unlike humans, dogs metabolize aspirin very slowly, and even a single tablet can cause serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and kidney damage. Never give aspirin to a dog without specific veterinary instruction.
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin) and non-benzodiazepine sleep aids (Ambien, Lunesta) are among the most commonly ingested human medications by dogs. While these drugs cause sedation in humans, dogs can have paradoxical reactions โ becoming agitated โ or experience dangerous CNS and respiratory depression. Any ingestion should be treated as an emergency.
Antidepressants โ including SSRIs like fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), SNRIs like venlafaxine (Effexor), and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) like amitriptyline โ are among the top 10 most common toxicoses reported in dogs. These medications can cause a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome, as well as cardiovascular effects. Any ingestion should be treated as an emergency.
Iron toxicity in dogs most commonly occurs when they ingest human iron supplements, prenatal vitamins (which contain high-dose iron), or multivitamins with iron. The toxicity follows a distinctive four-phase pattern and can be life-threatening even when early symptoms resolve. Any significant iron ingestion should be evaluated by a veterinarian promptly.
Decongestants โ including pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), phenylephrine, and oxymetazoline (Afrin nasal spray) โ are among the most dangerous common household medications for dogs. Pseudoephedrine in particular acts as a potent stimulant in dogs, causing dramatically elevated heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature, and can be fatal even at relatively low doses. They are found in many cold, allergy, and sinus medications.
Gorilla Glue (original formula) and similar polyurethane construction adhesives are uniquely dangerous for dogs because they expand dramatically when they contact moisture in the stomach โ expanding up to 4 times their original volume and hardening into a rigid foam mass. Unlike most ingested objects, this foam cannot be vomited up and almost always requires emergency surgery to remove. Any suspected ingestion of expanding polyurethane adhesive should be treated as a same-day emergency.
Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) is a common garden plant whose large leaves are highly toxic to dogs. The leaves contain oxalic acid and soluble oxalates that crystallize in the kidneys, causing acute renal failure. The stalks contain lower oxalate levels but should still be kept away from dogs. This is a serious toxicity emergency.
Cherry pits (and those of related stone fruits) contain amygdalin, which releases hydrogen cyanide when the pit is crushed or chewed. The cyanide risk is compounded by a physical hazard: whole pits that are swallowed can lodge in the intestines, causing a life-threatening obstruction. Cherry flesh in small amounts is not toxic, but the pit, stem, and leaves all pose hazards.
Flea and tick products contain a range of insecticides: pyrethrins (from chrysanthemums), synthetic pyrethroids (permethrin, cypermethrin), organophosphates (chlorpyrifos), and carbamates (carbaryl). Dogs can be poisoned by applying products not meant for dogs, by applying too much, or by ingesting the product. Permethrin-based products labeled for cats or yard use are a leading cause of severe neurological toxicity in dogs.
A single bee or wasp sting usually causes localized pain, swelling, and mild distress in dogs. The danger escalates in two scenarios: anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) in sensitized dogs, which can be fatal within minutes; and envenomation from multiple simultaneous stings (swarm attacks), where the cumulative venom dose causes systemic toxicity. Either situation is a veterinary emergency.
Single-use laundry pods (Tide Pods, Gain Flings, and similar products) contain a highly concentrated mixture of surfactants, enzymes, polymers, and fragrances encased in a water-soluble membrane. When a dog bites into a pod, this mixture is forcefully released into the mouth. The concentration of surfactants is 3โ10 times higher than liquid detergents, making ingestion significantly more dangerous than swallowing regular laundry detergent.
Hand sanitizer typically contains 60โ95% ethanol or isopropanol to kill pathogens. For dogs, this concentration of alcohol is highly toxic. A small dog licking a significant amount from a human's hand, or any dog chewing a bottle, can ingest enough to cause life-threatening alcohol poisoning. The risk increased substantially during periods of widespread sanitizer availability.
The Amaryllis (Hippeastrum species and Amaryllis belladonna), a popular holiday and garden plant, contains lycorine and related alkaloids throughout the plant โ with the highest concentration in the bulb. These alkaloids cause significant gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and neurological toxicity. Dogs that chew on bulbs, stems, or leaves are at risk, but bulb ingestion is the most serious scenario.
Lead (Paint Chips, Dust, Plumbing)
HIGH RISKLead poisoning (plumbism) in dogs most commonly results from ingesting paint chips or dust from pre-1978 buildings, lead solder or plumbing, lead fishing weights, golf balls, or contaminated soil. Dogs chew on painted woodwork, window sills, and baseboards. Because lead accumulates in the body over repeated exposures, chronic low-level exposure is as dangerous as a single large ingestion, just more insidious.
Avocados contain persin, a fungicidal toxin that causes fluid accumulation around the heart and lungs in many animals. Dogs are more tolerant than birds and rabbits, but the pit, skin, and leaves pose serious risks.
As marijuana becomes legal in more US states, dog exposures are increasing rapidly. Dogs are far more sensitive to THC than humans, and cannabis edibles are especially dangerous because they may also contain xylitol, chocolate, or raisins.
Bleach / Household Cleaners / Detergents
MEDIUM RISKHousehold bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and cleaning products are common causes of dog exposure calls to poison control. Most household bleach exposures cause GI irritation rather than life-threatening toxicity, but concentrated bleach, pool chemicals, and toilet bowl cleaners with stronger acid or alkaline formulations can cause caustic burns to the mouth, esophagus, and stomach.
Aloe vera is one of the most popular houseplants in the US, found in millions of homes. The gel inside aloe leaves has a reputation as a gentle skin soother โ but for dogs, ingesting the plant causes GI upset and in larger amounts, more serious effects. The toxic components are saponins and anthraquinone glycosides found primarily in the latex layer (the yellow sap just under the outer skin).
Tulips / Daffodils / Narcissus / Hyacinth
MEDIUM RISK (bulbs = HIGH)Spring bulb plants โ tulips, daffodils (narcissus), hyacinths, and crocuses โ brighten gardens and homes but pose a real risk to curious dogs who dig up or chew the bulbs. The bulb is the most concentrated source of toxins; flowers and leaves contain lower amounts but can still cause GI upset.
Stone Fruits โ Cherries, Peaches, Apricots, Plums
MEDIUM RISK (pits = HIGH)Stone fruits โ cherries, peaches, apricots, plums, and nectarines โ have fleshy fruit that is generally safe for dogs in small amounts, but the pit, seeds, stems, and leaves contain amygdalin, which releases hydrogen cyanide when metabolized. Chewed pits release cyanide; swallowed whole pits also present a choking and intestinal obstruction risk.
Morning Glory Seeds (Ipomoea species)
MODERATE RISKMorning glory (Ipomoea tricolor and related species) is a popular garden vine with beautiful flowers. The seeds, however, contain ergine (d-lysergic acid amide, LSA) โ a psychoactive compound similar to LSD. Dogs that eat morning glory seeds may show neurological symptoms including disorientation, agitation, and incoordination.
Dieffenbachia, commonly known as dumb cane, is one of the most popular houseplants โ and one of the most common causes of oral irritation in dogs. All parts of the plant contain needle-like calcium oxalate crystals (raphides) that cause immediate, intense pain and inflammation when chewed. While rarely fatal, the symptoms can be alarming.
Pothos & Philodendron (Epipremnum, Philodendron)
MODERATE RISKPothos (Epipremnum aureum) and philodendrons are staple houseplants found in millions of homes. They are also among the most frequent causes of plant-related calls to poison control for pets. Both contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause immediate burning and irritation when chewed.
Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is a popular indoor plant prized for its elegant white flowers and low-maintenance care. Despite its gentle name, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout its leaves and stems that cause immediate oral irritation when chewed. It is toxic to both dogs and cats.
Cinnamon in small culinary amounts is generally not toxic to dogs. However, large amounts of cinnamon powder or cinnamon essential oil can cause significant problems. Inhaling cinnamon powder can irritate the lungs, and large amounts cause GI irritation, liver damage, and blood sugar disruption. Cinnamon sticks can also pose a choking hazard.
The term 'artificial sweeteners' covers a wide range of compounds with very different risk profiles for dogs. Xylitol (covered in its own guide) is the most dangerous and can be fatal. Most others cause primarily gastrointestinal upset at high doses. Here is a guide to the most common sweeteners dogs may encounter.
Dogs may encounter paints and solvents during home improvement projects or by chewing painted surfaces. Risk varies significantly by product type. Water-based (latex) paints are generally minimally toxic. Oil-based paints, varnishes, and thinners contain petroleum distillates or turpentine that can cause serious GI, neurological, and respiratory damage, especially if vomiting leads to aspiration.
Antihistamines are among the most frequently ingested human medications in dogs, and the risk varies enormously by compound and dose. Plain diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is sometimes recommended by vets at specific doses for allergic reactions, but many combination products (Benadryl-D, cold medicines) contain decongestants, acetaminophen, or other compounds that are toxic to dogs. Always verify the exact formulation.
Acorns and Oak Leaves (Quercus species)
MODERATE RISKAcorns from oak trees (Quercus species) contain gallotannins โ compounds that cause gastrointestinal irritation and, with significant ingestion, kidney and liver damage in dogs. Dogs living near oak trees are at risk, especially in autumn when acorns fall and accumulate on the ground. The green, unripe acorns that fall in late summer and autumn contain higher tannin concentrations than mature acorns.
Tomato Plant (Leaves & Unripe Fruit)
MEDIUM RISKThe leaves, stems, and green unripe tomatoes of the tomato plant (Solanum lycopersicum) contain solanine and tomatine โ alkaloids that are toxic to dogs. Ripe red tomatoes contain minimal toxin and are generally safe in small quantities, but the green plant parts pose a real risk, especially if a dog chews through garden plants.
Apple Seeds (Amygdalin / Cyanide)
MEDIUM RISKApple flesh is safe for dogs, but the seeds contain amygdalin โ a cyanogenic glycoside that releases hydrogen cyanide when chewed and metabolized. A single apple's seeds are unlikely to cause serious harm to a medium or large dog, but intentional feeding of seeds, or a dog eating many apple cores, warrants caution and monitoring.
Eucalyptus plants and their derived essential oils contain eucalyptol (1,8-cineole) and other terpenoids that are toxic to dogs when ingested. Chewing on eucalyptus leaves typically produces mild GI symptoms. However, concentrated eucalyptus oil products (diffuser oils, topical preparations, chest rub products) are far more dangerous and can cause significant central nervous system depression and liver toxicity even in small doses.
Holly (Ilex aquifolium & Ilex opaca)
MEDIUM RISKAmerican Holly (Ilex opaca) and English Holly (Ilex aquifolium) are common holiday decorations and landscape plants whose berries and leaves are mildly to moderately toxic to dogs. The primary toxins are saponins (ilicin), methylxanthines, cyanogens, and possibly theobromine โ compounds that cause significant GI irritation. While holly toxicity is rarely fatal in dogs, it causes considerable suffering and small dogs that ingest significant quantities can become seriously ill.
Fabric Softener / Dryer Sheets
MEDIUM RISKDryer sheets and fabric softener sheets are attractive to many dogs due to their lingering scent. They contain cationic surfactants (quaternary ammonium compounds), fragrance compounds, and lubricating agents. When chewed or swallowed, the cationic detergents cause direct chemical burns to the mouth and GI tract, and the swallowed sheet can cause intestinal obstruction. While rarely life-threatening in healthy adult dogs, small dogs that swallow a full sheet face significant risk.
Most dogs are lactose intolerant โ they lack sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase needed to digest milk sugar (lactose). This means dairy products can cause GI upset ranging from mild to severe depending on the amount consumed and the individual dog's lactase activity. While dairy is rarely dangerous in small amounts, large quantities can cause significant discomfort and GI disturbance.
Silica gel is one of the most commonly ingested household items by curious dogs โ and one of the least dangerous, despite the alarming "Do Not Eat" warning on the packet. The warning exists because silica gel is not food, not because it is toxic. However, the packet itself (plastic or paper) can pose a choking or obstruction risk, and some silica gel products contain cobalt chloride (a blue color-indicator dye) which is mildly toxic.
