Fabric Softener Sheet Toxicity in Dogs
Dryer sheets and fabric softener sheets are attractive to many dogs due to their lingering scent. They contain cationic surfactants (quaternary ammonium compounds), fragrance compounds, and lubricating agents. When chewed or swallowed, the cationic detergents cause direct chemical burns to the mouth and GI tract, and the swallowed sheet can cause intestinal obstruction. While rarely life-threatening in healthy adult dogs, small dogs that swallow a full sheet face significant risk.

โก Immediate Actions
- 1Check your dog's mouth for ulcers or redness and rinse the mouth with water.
- 2Call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888) 426-4435.
- 3If the dog swallowed a full sheet, go to the vet for an x-ray to check for obstruction.
- 4Do NOT induce vomiting โ cationic surfactants cause more damage coming back up through the esophagus.
- 5Monitor for difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, or neurological signs.
Symptoms & Timeline
Immediate contact phase (0โ30 minutes)
- Drooling and pawing at mouth
- Oral ulcers or redness
- Vomiting
- Shaking the head
GI and neurological phase (30 minutes โ 4 hours)
- Continued vomiting
- Lethargy and weakness
- Muscle weakness (cationic surfactant CNS effect)
- Loss of coordination
- Signs of GI obstruction if sheet is swallowed (repeated vomiting, not eating)
โน๏ธ Safe Amount Context
Licking or brief contact with a used sheet (which has less concentrated surfactant) is lower risk. Swallowing part or all of a full or used sheet requires veterinary evaluation.
How Fabric Softener / Dryer Sheets Affects Dogs
Cationic surfactants (quaternary ammonium compounds such as DHTDMAC and DEEDMAC) carry a positive charge that allows them to bind tightly to negatively-charged biological membranes, disrupting membrane integrity. This causes direct chemical burns to oral mucosa, esophagus, and stomach. At systemic concentrations, cationic surfactants have neurotoxic effects โ disrupting the myelin sheath of peripheral nerves and causing muscle weakness. The physical sheet itself is a foreign body that can obstruct the GI tract, particularly in small dogs.
Frequently Asked Questions
My dog chewed a dryer sheet but did not swallow it โ is that OK?
Oral ulcers and GI upset are still possible from chewing without swallowing. Rinse the mouth with water, check for ulcers, and call your vet. Monitor for vomiting, lethargy, or difficulty eating for 24 hours.
Are used dryer sheets safer than fresh ones?
Used sheets have transferred much of their surfactant content to the laundry, so they carry a lower but not zero risk. Any chewing or swallowing of dryer sheets, used or new, should be reported to your vet.
What about liquid fabric softener?
Liquid fabric softener contains the same cationic surfactants and poses a similar risk. If a dog drinks liquid fabric softener or chews on a container, treat as you would for dryer sheet ingestion and contact your vet immediately.
