Why the 7× Rule Is Wrong

The popular idea that 1 dog year = 7 human years has no scientific basis. It was a rough average calculated decades ago by dividing average human lifespan (~70 years) by average dog lifespan (~10 years). But dogs age very differently than humans at different life stages.

A 1-year-old dog is sexually mature and fully grown — the human equivalent is closer to 15 years old, not 7. A 2-year-old dog has slowed down considerably and is equivalent to about 24 human years.

How Dog Size Affects Aging

Larger dogs age faster than smaller dogs after the first two years. A 10-year-old Great Dane is equivalent to roughly an 80-year-old human. A 10-year-old Chihuahua is closer to 58.
