How Hand Sanitizer (Ethanol / Isopropanol) Affects Dogs
Ethanol is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and depresses the central nervous system by enhancing GABA inhibition and blocking NMDA glutamate receptors. Dogs are smaller than humans and have less efficient metabolic pathways for ethanol oxidation, making them far more sensitive. Isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol, found in some sanitizers) is metabolized to acetone and is approximately twice as toxic as ethanol. Both compounds cause hypoglycemia by inhibiting gluconeogenesis in the liver.
