It disrupts cytochrome P450 enzyme pathways in the liver, causing hepatocellular damage at higher doses. Terpenoid compounds in eucalyptus also cause direct mucosal irritation and have some neurotoxic activity. Concentrated essential oils achieve toxic concentrations far faster than plant material due to the extraction and concentration of active compounds.
