Salmon poisoning disease is caused by Neorickettsia helminthoeca, a rickettsial bacteria that lives inside a fluke (Nanophyetus salmincola) that parasitizes raw Pacific Northwest fish. Is raw fish from the grocery store safe for dogs?

Atlantic salmon, tilapia, and most grocery store fish not caught in the Pacific Northwest do not carry this parasite. However, raw fish of any kind can harbor other bacteria and parasites — cooking fish is always safer for dogs.
What if my dog ate smoked salmon or cured salmon?
Smoked, cured, or dried Pacific salmon may still contain the infective fluke unless it was commercially processed to an internal temperature that kills the parasite. High-heat cooking (at least 140°F/60°C) or freezing to -4°F/-20°C for 7 days kills the parasite. Lox, cold-smoked salmon, and raw sushi-grade salmon are risky.
Can cats or humans get salmon poisoning?
