High sodium intake creates an osmotic imbalance that draws water from cells into the bloodstream and then into the kidneys for excretion. The body responds with extreme thirst to replace lost fluid. GI irritation from the concentrated salt causes vomiting and diarrhea, which further deplete water and worsen the osmotic imbalance.

How Salt / Sodium (large amounts) Affects Dogs
High sodium intake causes hypernatremia โ abnormally elevated blood sodium levels. This creates an osmotic gradient that draws water out of cells, including brain cells, causing them to shrink. The brain compensates by generating osmolytes, but rapid correction (giving water too fast) can cause the opposite: cerebral edema (brain swelling). The kidneys struggle to excrete the excess sodium load, especially if water intake is restricted.
What Your Vet Will Do at the Clinic
Salt poisoning treatment has a critical physiological constraint: the sodium must be corrected slowly. If the blood sodium level was elevated for more than a few hours, the brain cells have adapted by increasing their internal solute concentration to resist the osmotic shrinkage. If sodium is then lowered too rapidly with IV fluids, the brain cells โ which are now hypertonic relative to the corrected blood โ pull water in rapidly, causing cerebral edema that can be more dangerous than the original hypernatremia. The target correction rate is no more than 0.5 mEq/L per hour. Serial sodium measurements every 2โ4 hours guide the IV fluid rate. Seizures are controlled with diazepam. Dogs that drank small amounts at home should not be given large water volumes โ bring them to a clinic for controlled rehydration.

Can ocean water cause salt poisoning?
Yes. Dogs that drink large amounts of ocean water can develop sodium ion toxicosis. The salt concentration in seawater is about 3.5%, significantly above what dogs can process. Always provide fresh water when at the beach and discourage your dog from drinking ocean water.
What about rock salt and ice melt on paws?
Rock salt and most ice melt products can irritate paws and cause toxicity if licked. Rinse paws after walks in salted areas. If your dog has ingested ice melt directly (some find it palatable), call your vet โ ice melt products may also contain other chemicals.
How is salt poisoning treated?
